Rachel, you make very good points but alas, I think I may come into this from a somewhat blinkered perspective.

I feel that the very whiff of content marketing will alienate the majority because it sounds manufactured and 'something those internet marketers do'.

I reel back to the notion the majority of businesspeople are still very much green in the online context. So they need to be embraced, not fearful. And I believe the one way to do this is to talk their language.

Of which, sadly, content marketing does not feature.

You're right - first define "content". But even that sounds remote in comparison to what we do, which is perversely creating content every day of our lives.

As you can tell I don't know the answer, but I sense we're not close, yet. Will keep an eye on your work to see if you find it!

Nice piece. The real disservice of the name "content marketing" is it encourages us to frame "content" as something other, separate, and 'over there on that web site' (something not close to us or the hearts of our business). Whatever words we choose, they need to be something that convey the idea that our content is the information, education and inspiration that will help our customers through the challenges they face...not something we just post into a digital medium. Youtility is uh...a start. Nice pronoun, Jay! ;)

It's gonna take the might of Hercules to get us where we want to be but somehow I sense that this has a little more firepower in the arsenal than podcasting. And communications didn't begin in a bedroom (although I suppose cave paintings theoretically were a Prehistoric boudoir pursuit).

Thanks, AC. That was an article of lore - which now seems almost to be law! You're so right: What I've said all along is from passion pours forth personality, and that's what people love, cherish and crave. And that's how to become a respected and trusted advisor, which is pretty much what we're all about, right?

Love your message Dave. Of course we can get valuable tips from a lot of books and courses. You taught me so much about podcasting for example. But it is all about us and that's what I tell people too. You're the one thing that will make you stand out from the crowd, you really just need to go forth and shine. I think social media does play into insecurities too. Comparisons are so easily made and of course there's always someone with more followers. So trust in ourselves and confidence are more important than ever. Thanks for plugging that:)

@DaveThackeray It's not theory! It's life :P That's how we get friends, enemies everywhere. Not just business. Sports team can unite and divide. I had met people on Twitter talking about New York Knicks and basketball. That led to bit more conversation and retweets and even small recommendations. Doesn't make us friends yet, but it's step forward and small context already for people who live on different continents. Not sure I understand 'sharing context of context' tho.

@AdrijusG Nice theory, Adrijus. I don't think words really matter unto themselves but to help people express themselves. And in that sense discovering and sharing the context of 'context' is a pretty exciting thing, right?

You nailed it with authenticity. Context to me when it's correctly aligned with the customer's perspective and needs hits that fuzzy spot when both client and business owner are on the same wavelength.

You'll be hearing a lot more from me on fuzzy. Stick around?

Interesting definition of context. I'd define it as common interests and attitudes that let two people relate even though they don't know each other. Tweets let you slowly gain context by talking the topic of your niche but also finding commonalities outside of it. Which gives connection and authenticity(more buzzwords). Although Twitter is not as fast for gaining context as Google+ purely because of limited posts.
